Lauren Burhans, Ph.D.

Dr. Burhans serves as a liaison between Principal Investigators (PIs) using animals in research/teaching and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). She conducts pre-reviews of animal use protocols and amendments, offering guidance and support to PIs in the submission process, from preparation, revisions, to final approval. She also conducts grant congruency evaluations to ensure compliance with policies from federal funding sources and prepares internal and external regulatory reports. She facilitates communications with IACUC members, provides assistance to the IACUC Chair, and reports directly to the Director of the Office of Animal Welfare.

Dr. Burhans received her BS in Psychobiology from Westminster College and her PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois. She worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Associate at the (former) Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute at WVU for 14 years prior to joining the Office of Animal Welfare in 2018.
